Obama Visits Turkey, First Muslim Nation Visit
Monday, April 6, 2009
Obama has visited Turkey to insure its strong relationship with USA. Obama specifically states "The United States is not, and never will be, at war with Islam. In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical.". Now why would USA care about Turkey? Turkey is a key friend of the US in the middle east, Turkey is also a northern escape strategy from Iraq in worst cases. Turkey is also a member country of NATO.
During the campaign, Obama said he recognizes the Armenian Genocide in 1915, and will work to make US recognize it. Those who are not familiar with the Armenian Genocide, In 1915, Turks purposefully murdered 1.5 or more million Armenians in the country of Armenia (borders Turkey). Turkey fails to recognize this historic event but much of the creditable historians recognize it. USA has done little to recognize the Armenian Genocide, therefore Obama during campaign said that USA would take steps to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
Now today in Turkey, Obama talked briefly about the Armenian Genocide. He stated that USA cannot interfere with Turkey's and Armenia's views on the events and it should be left to them to decide on the event.
For the precise reason I stated above, Turkey is a key friend of the US in the middle east. Turkey takes the Armenian Genocide event very seriously and arrests anyone who speaks of it in Turkey. Turkey would stop its relationship with the USA, if we recognize this event. Another promise has been broken by the Obama administration.
BOTTOM LINE:
Obama's visit to Turkey is nothing more than a way to improve USA's relations with Turkey a key friend in the middle east. USA will never recognize the Armenian Genocide, while it is still friends with Turkey.
